Ants: diatomaceous earth kills ants by cutting them with a naturally occurring substance. I've tried this and I had to spread about a 1/2 of it in width along the walls. A straw seemed to work the best for controlling the amount. I'm not sure if it helped, but you might try placing the diatomaceous earth in a maze like formation since the ants will try to avoid it. I also caulked the openings that they came from. I even caulked the dishwasher. It takes a couple days to work. Powdering the ants directly also helps (powder them, but don't kill them so that they can take it back home.
